Soc 12 The Skeletal System Flashcards
5 functions of the skeletal system
Protect of vital organs, muscle attachment, joints for movement, stroing calcium and phosphurus, red and white blood cells production
What are the bones in the spine (5)
Thoracic (12), lumbar (5), cervical (7), sacram (5) and coccyx (4)
What are the bones in the legs (7)
Tibia, fibula, femur, patella, tarsels, metataresels and phalanges
What the the bones in the arm (6)
Humerous, radius, ulna, carpels, metacarpels and phalanges
What are the bones in the torso (4)
Rib cage, pelvis, clvicle, sternum
Long bones
Are longer than they are wide. Dont have to be bug
Short bones
Generally sane size length, width and thickness
Flat bones
usually protect organs or offer a good surface for muscles to attach to
Irregular bones
Have odd shapes and vary in function
Types of joints
Ball and socket, hinge, pivot and condyloid joint
Pivot joints
Allow bones to rotate in wrist, elbow and neck
Hinge joint
Only allow backward and forward motion in knee, elbow and ankle
Ball and socket joint
Rounded head of long bome that fits into a cup-shapedhole. Both hip and shoulder joints are ball and socket
Condyloid joint
Similar to ball and socket but ball rests against the end of the bone allowing circular motion
