Soc 12 - Skeletal System Flashcards
5 functions of the skeletal system
. Protection of vital organs
. Muscle attachments
. Joints for movement
. Storing calcium
. Red, white blood cell production
Bones in the hand and wrist
. Carpals
. Metacorpals
. Phalanges
What is the name for the shoulder blade
Scapula
What is the name for the coller bone?
Clavical
Bones in the foot and ankle
. Tarsals
. Metatarsals
. Phalanges
. Tibia
. Ribula
Bones in the leg
. Femur
. Patella
Bones in the arm
. Humerus
. Radias
. Ulna
Bones in the torso
. Pelvis
. Scapula
. Ribs
. Clavicle
What is a long bone?
They are longer than wider and help with movement, strength and speed.
What is a short bone
Generally the same size and length. They help with shock absorption and spreading loads.
What are the 4 joints?
. Hinge
. Pivot
. Ball and socket joint
. Condyloid joint
What does the hinge do?
Flextion and extension in the knee and elbow.
What does the ball and socket joint do?
Made up of a socket and a ball. E.g. femur fitting into hiphone. This creates a wide range of motion.
What does the condyloid joint-wrist joint do?
Mainly in the wist and allows us to do a circular motion.
What is extension?
Straightening movement that increases the angle
What is flextion?
Bending movement that decreases the angle
What is dorsiflexion?
Bending or flexing toes up, closer to the shin
What is Plantar flexion?
Extending or pointing toes down
What is a flat bone?
Protects organs or offer a good surface for muscle growth
What is abduction?
Movement that pulls away from the midline
What is adduction?
Movement that pulls towards the midline
What is Circumduction?
Moving in a circular shape
What is rotation?
Movement around a single axis
What is a tendon?
A tendon attaches the muscle to the bone which allow you to use more strength and power
What is a ligament?
Ligaments join bones to bones, usually to hold things together. They are more elastic than tendors.
