Soc 10: Preventing Injury Flashcards
What is an overuse injury?
This is an injury caused by overusing something. E,g pulling a muscle in your arm from bowling in cricket to much.
What is an acute injury?
An injury associate with a traumatic event. E.g getting a concussion in a rugby match
5 ways to prevent injury
Doing a PAR-Q Using the Principles of Training Warming up/cooling down Wearing protective equipment Checking equipment before use
How does doing a PAR-Q prevent injury?
Makes sure you are fit to complete exercise and/or lets you know what you can’t do
How does using the principles of training help to prevent injury?
Following things like FITT and rest/recovery can help prevent injury
How does warming up/cooling down help prevent injury?
Warming up muscles gradually helps prevent injury but it also makes your workouts more effective.
How does wearing protective equipment prevent injury?
It can help you by providing a defense to your body like wearing a helment in cricket prevents you being hit in the head by a hard cricket ball giving a concussion or worse.
How does checking equipment prevent injury?
By checking equipment is safe and in good condition you can stop and easily preventable injury through a fault in equipment.
How is a concussion caused?
Usually caused by a blow to the head on a contact sport. Symptoms can include headaches, weakness and loss of co-ordination.
What are the types of injuries to the bone?
Greenstick - break only part way across the bone
Transverse - break straight across
Oblique - break at an angle
Impacted - pieces locked into eachother
Comminutes - broken in more than 2 pieces
What is a dislocation?
When a bone at a joint is forced out of its natural position.
What is torn cartilage?
Cartilage tears often are caused by wear and tear but also long term overuse. They absorb impact and reduce the friction.
What is a sprain?
A sprain is damage to a ligament, one of the most common sprains.
What is a soft tissue injury?
One type of soft tissue injury is a strain, a twist, pull or tear of a muscle or tendon. The most common strain is in the back of a hamstring.
What is an abrasion?
It is friction through the skin against a rough surface.
What is a symptom of dislocations?
Deformity and swelling of the joint, which is locked out if position.
What is Golfer’s elbow?
Golfer’s elbow is an overuse injury which causes pain in the tendons where your forearm attaches to the bony bump on the inside of your elbow.
What is tennis elbow?
Tennis elbow is the pain and has the same cause as Golfer’s elbow just this time it’s on the outside of the elbow instead.
How can Tennis/golfer’s elbow be caused?
It can be caused by a number of reasons and not just in these two sports, it is usually an over use injury to do with movements with the elbow or possibly incorrect technique (e,g a bad swing in tennis).
How can Golfer’s/tennis elbow be treated?
It mainly just requires icing and rest however a brace can be worn while sport is being played and it hasn’t fully healed. It can take up to 6 months to heal and if by that point it doesn’t, surgery could be needed to fix it.
