Skeletal Systen Flashcards
Hematopoiesis
Production of all blood cells
Bone Marrow
Red bone Marrow
Yellow Bone Marrow
Red Bone Marrow
Conducts hematopoiesis/blood cell production
More common in younger animals
Found in pelvis, ribs, spine
Yellow Bone Marrow
Stores adipose
Most adult bones
Can revert to red if necessary
Erythropoiesis
Production of red blood cells
Osteon
Smallest functional unit of bone tissue
Found in compact bone
Haversian Canal
Hollow tubules that contain the bone’s blood and nerve supply
Osteoblasts
Cells that form bone
Osteocytes
Cells that maintain bone
Mature bone cells
Osteoclasts
Cells that break bone tissue down and reabsorb it
Hydroxyapatite
The major mineral constituent of bone tissue
Compact Bone
Dense portion of the bone
Comprises the shaft of the bone
Forms a shell around the softer cancellous bone
Cancellous Bone
Spongy bone
Comprises the ends of long bones and the inner wall of the medullary cavity
Epiphysis
Ends of long bones
Contains epiphyseal plate
Diaphysis
Shaft of middle or long bones
Medullary cavity
Internal cavity of mast bones that contain bone marrow
Periosteum
Superficial membrane of bones
“Surrounding”
Endosteum
Internal membrane that lines the medullary cavity
Articulations cartilage
Covers the articular surfaces
Epiphyseal plate
Growth plate found in long bones
Growth of long bones
- Produce cartilage that travels towards the center (diaphysis) of the bone
- the cartilage eventually ossifies into bone
- this occurs on both ends of bones which extends the length causing it to grow
Lone bone
Function: Basic movement and locomotion
Examples: femur, humerus, radius/ulna
Short bone
Function: support with very little movement
Examples: carpal and tarsal bones
Flat bones
Function: protection of organs, muscle attachment
Examples: scapula, ribs, cranium
