Liver-Lab Flashcards
Liver
Located in the cranial abdomen, just caudal to the diaphragm
In the right upper abdominal quadrant and part of the left upper abdominal quadrant
Synthesizes and secretes bile
Right liver lobes
Gallbladder Right medial Right Lateral Caudate Papillary process
Papillary process
Part of the Caudate Lobe
Originates from the right
Extends leftwards towards the stomach
Left liver lobes
Gallbladder
Quadrate
Left medial
Left lateral
Hepatic artery
supplies blood to the liver
towards
Hepatic vein
brings blood from the liver to the caudal vena cava
away
Hepatic portal vein
Brings blood from the spleen and small intestines to the liver
intestines bring blood to the liver to detoxify
Gallbladder
located between the right medial lobe and the quadrate lobe
Secretes and stores bile
Bile
Alkaline emulsifier
used to digest lipids
carries various waste products like bilirubin
Pancreas
- located in the upper abdomen
- immediately caudal to the stomach and medial to the duodenum
- performs both endocrine and exocrine functions
- contains Islets of Langerhans and acinar cells
Islet of Langerhans
Control endocrine functions
Acinar cells
Control exocrine functions
Exocrine functions of the pancreas
Releases various digestive enzymes onto a body surface or body cavity
Lipase
Trypsin
Amylase
Lipase
breaks down lipids
Trypsin
breaks down proteins
Amylase
breaks down starches and sugars
Biliary tree
the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas aid with digestion through the use of the biliary tree
Collects digestive substances and brings them to the duodenum where it is emptied
Hepatic duct (right and left)
“hepa” means liver
these ducts come from the left and right side of the liver
only the liver
Common hepatic duct
“common” refers to a combination
Combination of the hepatic ducts
Cystic duct
“Cyst” refers to a fluid-filled sac
Connected to the gallbladder
Common bile duct
Combination of all the ducts that are carrying bile
Pancreatic duct
duct that leads from the pancreas
Hepatopancreatic duct
combination of the pancreatic duct, the hepatic and cystic duct
Spleen
Upper left abdominal quadrant
Lateral to the stomach and caudal to the liver
Acts as a reservoir for blood
Hepatic vein also connects to it
