Protection in the stomach Flashcards
1
Q
Parietal cells will not release HCL immediately as that would damage the cell
A
Instead parietal cells will first release hydrogen into the stomach via a proton pump
2
Q
Parietal cells will then release Cl into the stomach
A
This forms Hydrochloric acid
3
Q
HCl acid and pepsin (that is released by chief cells) can potentially cause damage to the lining of the wall
A
This damage is strictly prevented by the mucoid wall produced by the goblet cells of the stomach
4
Q
Pepsin which breaks down proteins can even damage the chief cells as it is being released
A
Which is why it is released as pepsinogen not pepsin
