Accessory Digestive Organs Flashcards
Accessory Digestive organs
Pancreas
Liver
Gall Bladder
Billiary Tree
Collects digestive enzymes from the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas and empties into the duodenum
A mixture of bile and enzymes
Bile
A mixture of water, bile acids, and fats
Also, carry bilirubin that has been absorbed by the hepatic portal vein from the spleen
Bilirubin
Created as a byproduct from the heme oxidation (when a red blood cell is destroyed)
All bilirubin makes it to the liver for conjugation
Unconjugated bilirubin
Water-insoluble
Conjugated bilirubin
Water-soluble
Conjugated process
Unconjugated bilirubin is sent to the liver
Liver conjugates bilirubin making it water-soluble and sends it to the intestines along with bile
Conjugated bilirubin is converted to urobilirubin and stercobilirubin
Sterocobilin
is excreted through the intestines, turning feces brown
Urobilin
Reabsorbed in the intestines and sent to the kidneys to be excreted
If bilirubin is not conjugated or there is too much:
the unconjugated bilirubin circulates the bloodstream and is unable to be broken down properly
it stays in the circulatory system longer causing icterus or jaundice
