Skeletal System Ch 3 Flashcards
Musculoskeletal system
Consist of two systems that work together to support the body and allow movement of the animal - “the Skeletal system and Muscular system”
The skeletal system
Forms the framework that supports and protects the animal’s body
Red bone marrow
Found within the bone - Functions to form red blood cell, white blood cells and platelets (clotting cells)
Joints
Site of junction or union between bones. Aid in the movement of the body
Cartilage
Protects the end of bones where they contact each other (also found in the ear and nose)
Tendons
Connect muscle to bone allowing the animal to move
Ligaments
Connect bone to bone which supports joints
Connective Tissue
Tissue that binds together and supports various structures of the body. Examples: Bones, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage. A type of tissue in which the proportion of cells to extracellular matrix (space) is small -not a lot of cells which makes it bendable.
