selective breeding. Flashcards
what is selective breeding?
process by which humans breed plants and animals for particular genetic characteristics.
how is selective breeding done?
choosing parents with the desired characteristics from a mixed population.
they are bred together.
from the offspring those with the desired characteristics are bred together.
this continues over many generations until all the offspring show the desired characteristics.
why do framers use selective breeding?
to get favoured characteristics from an animal.
what are some problems associated with selective breeding?
traits are chosen to benefit humans not animals.
physical problems often occur in domestic animals eg: inflammation of the udder (mastitis) in cows due to to increased milk production.
usually involves inbreeding which can lead to reduced genetic diversity.
why do we do this?
disease resistant crops or garden plants.
animals that produce more meat/ milk.
domestic dogs and farm animals with gentil nature.
large, unusual brightly coloured or heavily scented flowers.
many different types of animals are produced using selective breeding. some cats are selectively bred so that they don’t cause allergies in people. suggest 2 other reasons people might selectively breed cats?
more gentil.
aesthetics.
selective breeding could cause problems of inbreeding in cats. describe one problem inbreeding in cats cause?
more likely to pass on diseases.
