decomposition. Flashcards
what is decay?
complex materials break down into more simple molecules which can then be reused.
what are detritivores?
eg: worms and woodlice which eat dead material and waste products.
what are decomposers?
eg: bacteria and fungi which digest everything.
what do decomposers and detrivires release when they respire?
waste products.
what conditions are needed for decay?
- warm.
- damp.
good oxygen.
why is it needed for decay: warm environment?
increase rate of reaction and speed up decay.
what happens if a condition is too hot?
dentaure enzymes, stopping reaction.
why is it needed for decay: damp?
matter disolves into water making it easier to digest and decompose.
why is it needed for decay: good oxygen supply?
decomposers and detritvaes need to respire to stay alive and oxygen is needed for respiration.
what are the 2 uses of decay?
compost and biogas.
what are the features of a compost bin?
- open at the bottom.
- loose fitting lid.
- air holes.
- dark coloured.
biogass: what would happen if oxygen levels were allowed to drop?
anaerobic respiration will take place.
which biogas is produced?
methane.
what can biogass be used as?
fuel.
