digestion. Flashcards
how many stages of digestion are there?
8.
what are the organs that help digest food in order called?
1) mouth.
2) oesophagus.
3) stomach.
4) liver.
5) pancreas.
6) S.intestine.
7) L.intestine.
8) anus.
what is the mouth’s role in digestion?
when food is chewed, saliva starts digesting carbohydrates.
what is the oesophagus’s role in digestion?
muscles push down the food into the stomach.
what is the stomachs role in digestion?
everything is blended with digestive juices, hydrochloric acid kills bacteria. enzymes break down proteins.
what is the liver’s role in digestion?
green liquid( bile) is stored in the liver then secreted to break down fats.
what is the pancreas’s role in digestion?
many kinds of digestive enzymes are made here.
what is the S.intestine’s role in digestion?
food is mixed with bile from the liver and juices from the pancreas to be sent back to the liver for more processing.
what is the L.intestine’s role in digestion?
indigestible food and water are processed, stored and dispersed.
what is the anus’s role in digestion?
solid waste passes from the rectum in order to leave your body.
what are the two different ways of breaking down food?
mechanical.
chemical.
what is mechanical digestion?
where (teeth) physically grind down food.
what is chemical digestion?
involves enzymes.
functions as a biological catalyst.
where is the enzyme protease produced and where does it work?
pancreas, stomach, S.intestine.
stomach, S.intestine.
where is the enzyme amylase produced and where does it work?
salivary glands, pancreas, S.intestine.
mouth, S.intestine.
