biodiversity. Flashcards
what is biodiversity?
variety of ll different species of organisms on earth, or within an ecosystem.
what is a bioindicator?
any species/ group of species who function, population or status can reveal the qualitative status of the environment.
what are some examples of seasonal changes?
temp, amount of rainfall, availability of water, levels of dissolved gases in water, hours of daylight.
what are geographical changes?
between one area and another. differences in soil, structure, pH, altitude, saltiness of water, availability of water.
how do organisms adapt to environmental changes?
natural mutations, natural selection, pass on benefit feature to offspring.
how do humans impact the environment?
destruction, exploitation, pollution, alien species, climate change, fragmentation of species.
how can humans help to maintain biodiversity?
breeding programmes for endangered species.
conservation and regeneration of rare habitats.
reintroduction of field margins and hedgerows in agricultural areas.
preventing fields where formera grow only one type of crop.
reduction of deforestation and carbon dioxide emissions.
recycling resources rather than dumping waste in landfill.
