control of blood glucose and diabetes. Flashcards
what is glycogen?
stored form of glucose. made up of many connected glucose molecules.
what is glucose?
simple sugar. important source of energy.
what is glucagon?
hormone formed in pancreas. promotes breakdown of glycogen in the liver.
what is insulin?
hormone- lowers level of glucose in the blood.
what is the role of insulin?
when there is too much glucose detected in the blood pancreas secretes insulin so glucose moves into cells.
liver converts glucose into glycogen. more glycogen is stored.
blood glucose levels return to normal.
what is the role of glucagon?
too little glucose detected in the blood means pancreas secretes glucagon. liver converts it into glucose.
less glycogen stored in the liver.
blood glucose level returns to normal.
type 1 diabetes: who?
cause?
how?
controlled?
children and teens. adults under the age of 40 yrs.
infection of pancreas, genetic link.
pancreas does not make enough insulin which leads to high levels of glucose in the blood.
injections of insulin.
type 2 diabetes: who?
cause?
what happens in the body?
controlled?
adults over the age of 40 yrs.
normally linked to poor diet/ obesity.
body no longer responds to the insulin you make.
exercise and diet.
