carbon cycle. Flashcards
what are fossil fuels?
remains of dead organisms that are burned as fuels releasing carbon dioxide.
what are carbon sinks?
areas of vegetation, the ocean or the soil which absorbs and stores carbon.
what adds carbon dioxide to the atmosphere?
respiration and combustion.
what removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere?
photosynthesis and it dissolving in oceans.
what are the 3 main greenhouse gases?
carbon dioxide, methane, water vapour.
what has happend to the carbon dioxide levels of the last 60 years?
increased.
what is decay caused by?
decompossers.
what are decomposers?
bacteria and fungi in soil.
what do decomposers use dead plants and animals for?
as food for respiration.
what do decay release into the atmosphere and what do they release into the soil?
carbon dioxide.
mineral ions.
how can we change the way we live to reduce carbon emissions?
- switching light, devices off when not in use.
- use public transport/ sharing vehicles.
- travelign more by foot/ cycling.
- turning down the heating.
- eat less meat and recycle more waste.
- generate/ use renewable energy.
