classification. Flashcards
what do living things have to be classified depending on?
structure, characteristics.
what is the classification system name whereby you classify by structure and characteristic?
binnamal naming system.
who developed the binnamal naming system?
carl linnaeus.
what could carl linnaeus do?
analyse RNA sequences.
what did being able to analyse RNA sequences do to previous thoughts?
some species less related than thought.
what system did carl linnaeus create?
3 domain system.
what were the 3 domains?
eukaryota, bacteria, archea.
what did evolutionary trees show?
relationships between different species or groups.
what were evolutionary trees based on?
common ancestors.
how were evolutionary trees compared?
structure and DNA.
what are the 5 kingdoms?
plant, animal, fungi, prokaryotes and protists.
what is the feature of the kingdom: plant?
produce food by photosynthesis, do not move and have cellulose cell wall.
what is the feature of the kingdom: animal?
consume food, move and have a nervous system.
what is the feature of the kingdom: fungi?
don’t move or photosynthesis, have chitin cell wall and grow by producing spores.
what is the feature of the kingdom: prokaryotes?
single cells with no nucleus.
what is the feature of the kingdom: protists?
single cells some have chloroplasts but no cell wall.
define taxonomy.
classification of species which allows the subdivision of living organisms into smaller and more specialised groups.
define binomial names and how should they be written?
system of naming plants and animals by giving them a name consisting of the genus (with a capital letter) then the species eg: homosapien- human. needs to be in italics or underlined.
how are kingdoms split into smaller taxonomic groups?
domain.
kingdom.
phylum.

order.
