competition. Flashcards
define interdependence.
survival of species depending on another different species.
define competition.
interaction between organisms or species in which both require a resource that is in limited supply.
define intraspecific.
between individuals of the same species (only best genes are passed on to next generation.)
define interspecific.
between individuals of different species.
why is competition important?
organisms can evolve, become better adapted to their environment, passing their favourable genes onto offspring allows this to happen.
define unstable communities.
occurs when the numbers of one species completely outweigh the other species in a community.
what factors do plants compete for?
water, light, nutrients, space.
why do plants compete for water?
to keep tissues rigid and supported and photosynthesis.
why do plants compete for light?
for photosynthesis. making food by using energy from the sun.
why do plants compete for nutrients?
so plants can make all the chemicals they need in their cells.
why do plants compete for spaces?
plant shed seeds far away so the parent plant is not in competition with its offspring.
