SCI EMERGENT MEDICAL MANAGEMENT Flashcards
Patients with a cervical spinal injury present with
bradyarrhythmia or vasodialtion and low BP due to neurogenic shock
Methylprednisolone
Can reduce secondary injury to the spinal cord.
can improve neurological recovery and function one year post SC injury if initiated within 8 hours of injury
Modest Systemic Hypothermia
Increased ambulatory rates with MSH
Fracture Management: Conservative
it is used for alignment, stability and further damage.
Halo vest to treat cervical spine injury
halo ring to stabilize cervical fractures that will require surgical intervention.
Fracture Management: Surgical
Unstable fractures that cant be realigned or reduced.
Use of screws/plates can improve the rate of bone healing and reduce dependence on immobilization or external devices retraction.
Orthotics
Halo vest - most effective
Philadephia collar - targets restrictions to flexion/extension in mid to lower c-spine
TSLO - thoracic lumbar sacral orthosis: stabilizes parts of the thoracic or lumbar spine
