Action tremor
seen with any kind of voluntary movement
Resting tremor
Parkinson’s only seen at rest and disappears with voluntary movement
Intention tremor
attempting to move an extremity for a goal directed behavior.
Essential tremor
seen with rest and voluntary movement
MS
Tremors can be seen in MS if lesion occurs in the basal ganglia
Dystonia
persistent muscle contractions; distorted body positions
Athetosis
Slow, writing movements
Chorea
Abrupt, involuntary, random movements
Huntington’s Disease
caused by expansion of a-gene. onset between the age of 30-40 years old.
indirect pathway of the basal ganglia is affected.
Lifespan 15-20 years.
Parkinson’s Disease
Damage to the direct pathway - results in excess slowing of movement.
Cerebral Palsy
Congenital disorder that develops in developing fetus. Can suffer from Epilepsy.
Stroke
Present with kinesias related to hemi chorea, dystonia, or parkinson’s depending on the location of the infarction.
