Removal of brain tissue in order to alleviate disease symptoms.
Main purpose - disrupt abnormal signaling to the thalamus.
Can improve - tremor, Bradykinesia, rigidity, gait disturbances
Deep brain stimulation
Is effective in improving impairment in specific populations of ppl with PD.
Done to counter motor fluctuations + dyskinesias
Pallidotomy - PVL of GPi is to treat rigidity, tremor, Bradykinesia + dyskinesias
Who benefits
PD + does not benefit from DBS
Impact of DBS
Increases on periods and decreases symptoms. It has positive effects on sleep and pain.
DBS is ineffective in managing gait and balance impairments that are not responsive to medications.
There could be changes in speech and swallowing with DBS
