1.6 Movement System Diagnosis Flashcards
Movement Pattern Coordination Deficit
Deficits in timing of sequence.
slow guarded steps requiring assistance for balance
UE - slow or awkward reaching with difficulty adjusting grip or controlling force
LE - lack of dorsiflexion
Force Production Deficit
MMT score of less than 4/5 throughout a limb or focal to one joint.
Unable to stand on one limb unsupported
inability to initiate sit to stand or needing assistance
Sensory Detection Deficit
Lack of joint propriocpetion
Affects vision / vestibular system
When vision tested more than 50% deficit
presents with hyperextension of the knees before hip extension
increases sway or loss of balance when standing without vision
Sensory Selection and Weighting Deficit
complaints of postural instability, dizziness, or visual motion sensitivity
instability with head turns or during turns - worsened with increased speed
Perceptual Deficit
Tendency to resist correction of alignment related to inaccurate perception of vertical orientation resulting in postural control deficits.
Fractionated Movement
inability to fractionate movement due to greater hyperexcitability of a limb.
UMN lesion - associated with a central nervous system issue.
Hypermetria
Movements are too large.
present with impaired coordination unrelated to equilibrium and often have cerebellar dysfunction.
movements under or overshoot when moving towards targets.
gait patterns or other movements lacks fluidity and smoothness.
Hypokinesia
slowness in initiating and executing movement or ongoing movement.
Abscence or delayed timing of postural adjustments, and inability to use appropriate postural control strategies.
Most commonly seen in patients with parkinsons
Cognitive deficit
unable to follow instructions to modify their movement performance or remember instructions related to movement.
