Rhabdomyolysis Flashcards
What is Rhabdomyolysis?
Rhabdomyolysis is the breakdown of skeletal muscle, leading to the release of muscle by-products into the bloodstream, which can harm the kidneys.
What are common causes of Rhabdomyolysis?
Common causes include long lie, trauma (e.g., crush injuries), excessive exercise, overexertion leading to ATP depletion, and alcohol abuse.
What are the key symptoms of Rhabdomyolysis?
Key symptoms include dark reddish-brown urine (myoglobinuria), fever, tachycardia, hypertension, severe muscle aches, and fatigue.
Myoglobinuria is often described as tea or Coca-Cola colored.
Who is at higher risk for complications from Rhabdomyolysis?
Individuals over 40 or those with chronic kidney disease are at higher risk for complications.
When do symptoms of Rhabdomyolysis peak?
Symptoms may peak 24 to 72 hours after the inciting event, such as a workout or injury.
What is the treatment for Rhabdomyolysis?
Aggressive fluid administration is crucial to prevent kidney damage due to myoglobin accumulation. Hospital management is recommended as there is limited evidence for pre-hospital treatments.
