OSTEOARTHRITIS Flashcards
What is Osteoarthritis?
degenerative or ‘wear and tear’ joint disease.
What 3 facts about Osteoarthritis?
*Most common form of arthritis
*Affects both sexes
*affects > 40 years of age
What are the 2 cause types of Osteoarthritis?
Primary and Secondary
What are the 4 Primary osteoarthritis caused by?
- Aging
- Metabolic factors
- Genetics
- Chemical & Mechanical factors
What are the 2 Secondary osteoarthritis caused by?
- Trauma
- Obesity
How does Osteoarthritis affect Articular cartilage?
*Articular cartilage of weight-bearing joints in particular (hips, knees).
*damaged and lost through structural fissures and erosion from excessive mechanical stress.
In Osteoarthritis The joint space becomes narrower. True or False.
True
Osteoarthritis affects joint movement?
surface of the cartilage becomes rough and worn, interfering with easy joint movement.
Osteoarthritis causes enzymes to be released that affect?
Tissue damage appears to cause release of enzymes from the cells, which accelerates the disintegration of the cartilage.
How does Osteoarthritis affect the subchondral bone ?
Eventually the subchondral bone may be exposed and damaged, and cysts and osteophytes develop around the margin of the bone.
In Osteoarthritis, how dose osteophytes affect the body?
Pieces of the osteophytes and cartilage break off into the synovial cavity, causing further irritation.
Osteoarthritis affects the surrounding tissues by?
There may be secondary inflammation of the surrounding tissues in response to altered movement and stress on the joint.
