Diabetes Flashcards
2 Functions of the Pancreas?
Exocrine
Endocrine
The Exocrine Function of the Pancreas?
Produces digestive enzymes (proteases, lipases, amylases)
Theses are secreted into the duodenum via the pancreatic duct.
The Endocrine Function of the Pancreas?
Produces hormones, primarily insulin and glucagon, from the islets of Langerhans.
Insulin is secreted by?
beta cells in response to high blood sugar levels.
What does Insulin transport?
glucose
Glucagon is secreted by?
by alpha cells when blood sugar levels are low..
What are the 2 types of Diabetes Mellitus?
type 1 & 2
Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus is?
An autoimmune disease where the body attacks beta cells, leading to insufficient insulin production.
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is?
A reduced insulin production and insulin resistance.
Over time, the body becomes less responsive to insulin, leading to hyperglycemia.
Diabetes Insipidus is?
A deficiency of antidiuretic hormone (ADH), leads to excessive urination (polyuria) and increased thirst (polydipsia).
Gestational Diabetes is?
Occurs during pregnancy due to hormones produced by the placenta that increase insulin resistance.
typically resolves after childbirth
4 types of Diabetes
1) Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus
2) Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
3) Diabetes Insipidus
4) Gestational Diabetes
