HDL

A

“Good” cholesterol. High-density lipoprotein. HDL picks up/removes LDL once repairs are done. Low HDL levels compared to LDL levels cause a buildup of LDL in the blood vessel wall, which eventually leads to an atheroma.

LDL

A

“Bad” cholesterol (if levels are higher than HDL). Low-density lipoprotein. LDL is sent to a damaged blood vessel where it is absorbed into the vessel wall to repair it. Requires HDL to remove it from the vessel wall once repairs are done.

A

Blood pressure while heart ventricles are contracting. The normal systolic range for adults: 90-140. (This is the top number of blood pressure b/c it’s written like a fraction).

A

Blood pressure in between heart contractions/ during resting periods. The normal range in adults is 60-90. Bottom number of blood pressure.
