Chapter 6 Diagnostic Tests & Procedures Flashcards
Angiogram
Used to locate a blockage of an artery
Cardiac Catherization
Insertion of catheter (hollow tube) in the femoral artery to gain access to the coronary arteries
Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG)
Bypassing the blocked artery w/ another artery taken from the patient from somewhere else
Coronary angiogram
Special dye is released into coronary artery through a catheter that was inserted through the femoral artery. This is used to visually check for blockages.
Balloon Angioplasty w/ stent
Balloon with a stent/wire cage-like tool is inserted into vessel to open a clogged artery. Balloon is then removed and the stent is left to keep the vessel from collapsing. 3-4 stents are typically used.
This is a temporary fix. Plaque can still adhere to the stent.
This procedure is minimally invasive, so the pt is still awake.
(AKA PCTA- percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty)
Who preforms a balloon angioplasty?
Usu preformed by an interventional cardiologist
Defibrillation
Shocking of the heart to stop it so it can correct itself and beat normally (AED- Automated External Defibrillator)
Pacemaker
Internal defibrillator that regulates heart rate
EKG (Electrocardiogram)
Test to analyze conduction through the heart
Holter monitor
portable EKG that monitors electrical impulses through the heart
Stress test
A procedure that tests how efficiently the heart pumps blood
Heart transplant
Only treatment for CHF
