Chapter 5 Patho: Diseases and Conditions of Blood Flashcards
What is anemia and what is a treatment for it?
Anemia is a low blood cell count and it can be treating through blood transfusions through blood donations.
Aplastic Anemia
Bone marrow is not able to produce red blood cells.
Hemolytic Anemia
Destruction of red blood cells (usually due to chemo)
Sickle-Cell Anemia
Genetic disorder where bone marrow produces abnormally shaped red blood cells. Sickle cells cannot function. Oxygen cannot attach to it. Due to it’s sickle shape, it can scrape and tear vessels. Causes pain.
Hemophilia
Genetic disorder where you cannot clot properly (thrombocyte). Not common.
Leukemia
Cancer of bone marrow where white blood cells are overproduced and do not function correctly.
Multiple Myeloma
Malignant cancer in bone marrow which produces abnormal plasma cells.
Polycythemia
Excessive production of red blood cells. Also a bone marrow disorder. Not cancerous. Causes lots of clots, thickening of the blood, and overworking of the heart. Treatments include removing blood to thin it out.
