Chapter 8 Digestive System Guided Notes Flashcards
Function of Digestive System
Physical and chemical breakdown of food so it can be used by the body
Digestion
Breakdown of food
Ingestion
Intake of food and liquids
Absorption
Movement of nutrients into bloodstream
Elimination
Removal of waste from body
Salivary glands
Parotid gland, sublingual gland, submandibular gland
Small intestine pathway
Duodenum, Jejunum, Ileum
Large intestine pathway
Cecum/appendix, ascending, transverse, descending, sigmoid, rectum, anus
Physical change
What you start with and the product is chemically the same but physically different
Chemical change
Breaking of chemical bonds; product is completely different from starting material
Mastication
Chewing (is a physical change)
Deglutition
Swallowing
Amylase
Enzyme in saliva that breaks bonds of food (is a chemical change)
Peristalsis
Slow/wave-like contraction of smooth muscle
Salivary glands
Parotid gland, sublingual gland, submandibular gland
Gastric acid
AKA hydrochloric acid. Acid in stomach.
Rugae
Fold in the stomach wall that makes the wall 3x thicker than the rest of the stomach. This is to protect from hydrochloric acid.
Where does absorption occur?
In thelarge and small intestines, through many capillaries. Nutrients/ fluid is directly absorbed into bloodstream.
Mouth
Receives food into the oral cavity as it is tasted and broken down by the teeth (mastication)
Teeth
Hard structures in the mouth that break down food by chewing (mastication)
Tongue
muscular organ that contains taste buds. Aids in chewing/swallowing (degultition)
Function of salivary glands
Secretes amylase that aids in chemical breakdown of starchy foods
Pharynx
Throat. Carries food, liquid, and air.
3 sections of pharynx
Nasopharynx, Oropharynx, Laryngopharynx
Esophagus
Muscular tube that carries food to the stomach using peristalsis
Stomach
Receives food from the esophagus.
How long does food stay in the stomach for?
1-4 hours
Small intestine
Process of digestion is completed here.
How long is the small intestine?
17-20 feet long and an inch in diameter
Colon
Large intestine. Absorbs liquids/water and remaining indigestible materials (feces), which is excreted through anus
How long is the colon
5 ft long and 2 inches in diameter
Rectum
Last part of large intestine that stores waste before it passes through anus
Feces
Stool/poop. Indigestible waste expelled through anus
Liver
Located in RUQ. Stores nutrients, breaks down fats and helps remove waste from body, converts glycogen to glucose for energy, makes bile.
Gallbladder
Stores and concentrates bile. Is a small sac inferior to liver
Pancreas
Produces enzymes for digestion and neutralizes acid.
Pathway of food
Oral cavity/mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestines, large intestines, rectum, anus
