ANTIHISTAMINES: INDICATIONS
A
- 1st line for allergies (hay fever)
- Aid relief of Pruritis and Hives to insect bites or drug allergies
- Adjunct in Anaphylaxis
- Can be used for Nausea and Vomiting

ANTIHISTAMINES: MOA
A
Antagonist of H1 receptor
- Histamine is released from storage granules in mast cells as a result of antigen binding to IgE on the cell surface
- Induces type 1 Hypersensitivity
- AntiH blocks the effects of excessive Histamine release

ANTIHISTAMINES: ADVERSE EFFECTS
A
- Sedation ( H1 receptors have a role in wakefulness)
- Second gen AntiH don’t have this effect as they don’t cross the BBB

A
- Sedating Anti H should be avoided in Liver Dx patients
