  • Enhances and facilitates the binding of GABA to GABA-A receptor
  • Widespread depressive effect on on synaptic transmission

Z DRUGS: ADVERSE EFFECTS

A
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Rebound insomnia
  • CNS effects = headaches, confusion, nightmares, amnesia
  • ZOPLICONE = taste disturbance
  • ZOPLIDEM = GI upset
  • Prolonges use beyond 4 weeks = dependence, withdrawl symptoms on stopping ( headaches, muscle pains and anxiety)
  • OD = drowsiness, coma and respiratory depression

  • Enhance the effects of alcohol, antihistamines and benzodiazepines
  • Enhance hypotensive effects of antihypertensive medications
  • P450 drug inhibitors = macroclides enhance sedation
  • P450 drug inducers = phenytoin, rifampicin can impair sedation
