- Enhances and facilitates the binding of GABA to GABA-A receptor
- Widespread depressive effect on on synaptic transmission

Z DRUGS: ADVERSE EFFECTS
A
- Daytime sleepiness
- Rebound insomnia
- CNS effects = headaches, confusion, nightmares, amnesia
- ZOPLICONE = taste disturbance
- ZOPLIDEM = GI upset
- Prolonges use beyond 4 weeks = dependence, withdrawl symptoms on stopping ( headaches, muscle pains and anxiety)
- OD = drowsiness, coma and respiratory depression

- Elderley
- Obstructive sleep apnoea
- Resp muscle weakness
- Resp depression

Z DRUGS: INTERACTIONS
A
- Enhance the effects of alcohol, antihistamines and benzodiazepines
- Enhance hypotensive effects of antihypertensive medications
- P450 drug inhibitors = macroclides enhance sedation
- P450 drug inducers = phenytoin, rifampicin can impair sedation
