- Reduce serum cholesterol levels
- Inhibit 3-hydroxy-3-methyl glutaryl coenzyme A (HMG CoA) reductase

STATINS: ADVERSE EFFECT
A
- Generally safe and well tolderated
- Headaches
- GI disturbances
- Serious effects on muscle = myopathy, rhabdomyolysis
- Rise in Liver enzymes

STATINS: WARNINGS
A
- Used in caution with patients with hepatic impairment
- Reduce dose in patients with renal impairment
- Avoid in pregnant and breastfeeding women

STATINS: IMPORTANT INTERACTIONS
A
- Cytochrome P450 inhibitors = amiodarone, diltiazem, itraconazole, macroclides and protease inhibitors
- Amlodipine
