Function of a Urinary Tract Antiseptic
Inhibit growth of bacteria in the urine. Used to treat UTIs and acute cystitis.
Nitrofurantoin
Urinary tract antiseptic, should be taken with food, turns the urine brown. Contraindicated in patients with renal impairment.
Function of Floroquinolones
Suppress bacterial growth by inhibiting an enzyme which enables DNA synthesis. Types include ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, ofloxicin and norfloxacin. Administer with a full glass of water and increase fluid intake to minimize development of crystaluria.
Side effects of Floroquinolones (Ciprofloxacin)
Dizziness, visual disturbance and light sensitivity indicate CNS toxicity
Sulfonomides
Suppress bacterial growth by inhibiting folic acid synthesis. Types include sulfadiazine, trimethoprim, sulfamethoxazole. Take on an empty stomach with a full glass of water. Withhold if rash appears.
Side effects of trimethoprim and sulfadiazine
Rash, fever, photosensitivity, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia
Function and side effect of hemopoietic growth factors
Stimulate the production of red blood cells. Used to treat anemia in CKD. Major side effect is hypertension.
