Endocrine System - NEW Flashcards
ADH is secreted by the…
Posterior pituitary gland
The Adrenal Cortex produces
Corticoids (aldosterone and cortisol) and mineralocorticoids.
Catecholamines
Adrenaline and noradrenaline - produced in the adrenal cortex
Cordicoids
Aldosterone and cortisol
Aldosterone is responsible for….
Regulating the BP through the renin-angiotensin aldosterone system.
Cushing’s Disease
Caused by an overproduction of cortisol due to a problem within the body.
Symptoms of Cushing’s Disease
Cortisol is a stress hormone.
- thick trunk
- hypertension
- moon face
- high glucose levels
- purple striae on body
- buffalo hump
Cushing’s Syndrome
Usually cased by treatment such as glucocorticoid therapy.
Addison’s Disease
Caused by low cortisol levels in the body (cortisol produced by the adrenal cortex). Usually caused by an autoimmune condition, tumor or trauma.
Symptoms of Addison’s Disease
- hyponatremia
- hypoglycemia
- tired and weak
- electrolyte imbalance
- hypotension
- increased skin pigmentation
- diarrhea and nausea
Addisonian Crisis
Life threatening condition resulting from extremely low cortisol levels in the body. 5 s’s
- sudden pain in back or legs
- syncope (passing out)
- shock
- super low BP
- severe vomiting, diarrhea and headache
Treated with IV cortisol and IV fluids.
Pheochromocytoma
Tumor found in the adrenal medulla which causes and overproduction of noradrenaline and adrenaline. Causes fight or flight symptoms on a regular basis. Can be episodic or triggered.
Symptoms of Pheochromocytoma
- increased BP and pulse
- facial flushing
- increased glucose levels
- fat broken down
- weight loss
- anxiety and fear
- heat intolerance
- sweating
- tremors
- headache
Treatment for Pheochromocytoma
Adrenalectomy (bi or unilateral)
Hypertensive crisis
Systolic >180, diastolic >120
