25
Q

What is the function of platelets?

A

Found in the blood and function in clot and plug formation.

26
Q

What is a D-Dimer?

A

Blood test that measures a substance that is released when a blood clot breaks up. Used to test for DVT and PE.

27
Q

What is ammonia?

A

Forms when protein is broken down by bacteria in the intestines . Converted into urea by the liver, which is then eliminated in urine. Ammonia levels in the blood rise when the liver is not able to convert ammonia to urea. May be caused by cirrhosis or severe hepatitis.

28
Q

What is bilirubin?

A

Created by the breakdown of red blood cells in the liver. Can cause jaundice.

29
Q

What is Amylase?

A

Enzyme which breaks down carbohydrates. Secreted by the pancreas.

30
Q

What is Lipase?

A

Enzyme which breaks down fats into fatty acids. Secreted by the pancreas.

31
Q

What is Serum Creatinine?

A

A waste product of muscle use which is filtered out of the blood by the kidneys. Levels rise as kidney function declines.

32
Q

What is Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN)?

A

Formed by the liver during the breakdown of protein, a byproduct of metabolism. Filtered out by the kidneys. Increased levels indicate reduced kidney function.

33
Q

What is ESR?

A

Erythrocyte sedimentation rate. The amount of red blood cells that settle out of anti coagulated blood in 1 hour. Indicates necrosis or infection.

34
Q

What is hemoglobin?

A

A protein carried by red blood cells which transports oxygen and carbon dioxide around the body.

35
Q

What is hematocrit?

A

The proportion of blood that contains red blood cells.

36
Q

What is serum iron?

A

The amount of circulating iron bound to transferrin. Reduced levels can indicate anemia.

37
Q

What are Erythrocytes?

A

A red blood cell which contains hemoglobin and transports oxygen to the body.

38
Q

What is the function of serum sodium?

A

Works in the ECF, controls osmotic pressure, aids in nerve impulse transmission.

39
Q

What is the function of serum potassium?

A

Works in the ICF, maintains acid/base balance, aids in muscle and electrical conduction.
