Radio - Ultrasound Of EQ Flashcards
Reasons for using ultrasound
Injury to flexor tendons
Radiographs fail to pick up tendons
Well established
Strong reflection of tissue
Will appear white
Weak reflection of tissues
Will appear grey or black
Depth sensed on ultrasounds
Depth is determined by how long the wave took to travel out and back to the transducer
High frequency
Leads to better resolution but shallow penetration
Lower frequency
Has decreased resolution but deeper penetration
Echogenicity
Appearance using shades of grey
Anechoic
Darker appearances on ultrasounds
Has to do w tissue density - edema /fluid often appears anechoic
Isoechoic
A similarity in adjacent shades of gray
Hyperechoic
Bright appearance of tissues due to increased density
Common preparation
Hair clipping
Clean area - wet /gel
Standard equipment
Ultrasound machine
High frequency lines transducer
Stand-off pad
Purpose of stand off pad
Creates distance for superficial structures
Imaging technique
Evaluate structures individually
Scan prox to distal
Scan abnormalities in both places (transverse & longitudinal)
Limbs are weight bearing
