Three Types of Textual Evidence
- Direct Quote
- Summarizing
- Paraphrasing
serve as a word-for-word transcriptions of a text extracted from the source. These quotes are usually demarcated by quotation marks and is attributed to the author of the original text.
Direct quotes
How to accurately utilize direct quotes
- use them prudently, use them when exact wording is indispensable to your argument
- encase in quotation marks; attribute to orig authors using in-text citation
- abstain from modifying the wording or alter its meaning
entails restating a passage or idea from the original text in your own words.
Paraphrasing
How to accurately do paraphrasing:
- read and apprehend the meaning of the passage or idea
- restate the information with your own words and sentence structure
- attribute the paraphrase to original author with an in-text citation
entails detailing the essential aspects of a text into a more condensed rendition, which can serve as an overview of a more lengthy composition or highlight its principal ideas.
Summarizing
How to accurately do summarizing:
- carefully read the entire text and determine the main points or ideas
- articulate a shorter version of the original text using your own language, containing the primary concepts
- Attribute summary to original author by incorporating an in-text citation
