Protista Flashcards
unicellular
an organism that is composed of a single cell
eukaryotic
contains a nucleus and membrane bound organelle
heterotrophic
organisms that are not capable of making their own food
osmosis
the movement of water across a semi permeable membrane from a region of high water concentration to low water concentration
passive diffusion
does not require energy eg osmosis
osmoregualtion
the control or balance of water and salt levels in an organism
osmosis in a plant cell
in a more concentrated solution it will wilt
features of kingdom protista
unicellular eukaryotic heterotrophic lives in fresh water eg amoeba, algae
cell membrane
semi permeable
cytoplasm
divided into
endoplasm (grainy)
ectoplasm (clear)
pseudopodia
allows movement of amoeba by:
pseudopodia extend in desired direction
cytoplasm moves into pseudopodia
cell moves
engulf and digest prey by:
amoeba kill prey by secreting acid and digestive enzymes
pseudopodia engulf prey
contractile vacuole
function: osmoregulation
amoebas cytoplasm is more concentrated than the surrounding fresh water where it lives
without the contractile vacuole amoeba would expand and burst
how does the contractile vacuole work
- water enters amoeba by osmosis
- excess water enters contractile vacuole
- contractile vacuole swells and moves to the edge of the cell
- contractile vacuole bursts and expels water from the edge of the cell
- cycle repeats
contractile vacuole process not needed in marine/sea water
solute concentration in amoeba similar to external environment so water moves in and out of amoeba by osmosis
