What species does Suipoxvirus affect?
A
Swine!
Low mortality and morbidity in adult pigs.
High mortality in piglets.

Where is SPV endemic?
A
Worldwide sporadic disease

How is SPV transmitted?
A
- Skin injury – virus can survive in scab for years.
- Haematopinus suis.
- Flies and insects.
- Transplacental infection

What are the clinical signs of SPV?
A
Transient Fever.
Typical Pox Lesions (macule –> papule –> vesicle –> pustule –> ulcer –> scab)

Where are SPV lesions most obviously seen?
A
Abdomen and inner aspects of thighs.

In severe infections, especially in congenitally-aquired infections, where are lesions found?
A
Upper respiratory
Digestive tract

What are methods of control for SPV?
A
Eradication of lice from piggery.
No vaccine avalible.
