Poxviridae - Capripoxvirus Flashcards
What does Capripoxvirus include?
- Sheep pox
- Goat pox
- Lump skin disease of cattle
Where is Capripoxvirus endemic?
Africa
Asia
Parts of Europe
Are SPV and GPV transmittable to other species?
Most strains are host specific BUT some strains have equal virulence in both species.
Can LSDV cause disease in sheep or goats?
No.
How is SPV/GPV transmitted?
Primary- Aerosol route of respiratory tract.
Mucous membrane
Abraded skin
Arthopods
What are the clinical signs of malignant SPV?
Affects Lambs and Nonnative Breeds (Merino)
Initial:
Depression, high fever, salivation, lacrimation, edema of eyelids, mucopurulent serous nasal discharge.
Later:
Pox lesions develop on skin and mucosa.
Heal leaving a star-shaped scar.
Lamb mortality reaches 100%
What are the clinical signs of benign SPV?
More common in adults and resistant breeds.
Only skin lesions occur.
No systematic reaction.
Is SPV reportable?
Yes, in most countries.
What are some prevention measures for SPV?
Prohibition of importation of animals from affected animals.
Cull affected flocks and quarantine premises.
Are there vaccinations for SPV?
Long lasting- Live attenuated (>1 year)
Temporary - Killed vaccine
There is a subunit vx available too.
Is GPV reportable?
Yes.
What are the clinical signs of GPV?
Same as SPV.
Describe the flat hemorrhagic form of GPV.
Affects European goats.
Has a high mortality.
Where is Lumpy Skin Disease endemic to?
sub-Saharan Africa
Middle East– Iraq
How is LSD transmitted?
Arthopods (primarily)
Direct-contact
