Poxviridae - Avipoxvirus Flashcards
Is Fowlpox the same thing as chicken pox?
No.
Chicken pox is caused by Human herpesvirus 3.
T/F Fowlpox was the first virus to be grown in embryonated eggs.
True.
What are the hosts of FPV?
Chickens
Turkeys
Where is FPV found?
Worldwide.
What makes FPV so virulent?
Extremely resistant to desiccation.
Can survive in exfoliated scabs for long periods.
How is FPV transmitted?
- Abrasions as result of fighting or pecking.
- Mosquitos, lice, ticks
- Possibly by aerosol route
What are the three forms of FPV?
- Cutaneous (Dry) Form
- Diphtheric (Wet) Form
- Ocular Form
What are some characteristics of the cutaneous (dry) form?
- Most common
- Low mortality
- Small papillose on comb, wattles, and around the beak. Occasionally on legs, feet, and around cloaca.
- Nodules become yellow and produce a scab.
- Decreased egg production.
- Affected birds recover in 4 weeks.
What are some characteristics of the diphtheric (wet) form?
- Caused by droplet infection
- Infects MM of mouth, pharynx, larynx, and trachea.
- Lesions coalesce which can cause asphyxiation.
- Poor prognosis
What are the characteristics of the ocular form?
- Conjunctivitis
2. Cheesy exudate accumulates under eyelids.
What inclusion body is pathognomonic for Avipoxviruses?
Bollinger bodies – Eosinophilic granular intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies.
What inclusion body is within Bollinger bodies?
Barrel bodies
How is FPV controlled?
Modified live fowlpox or pigeon pox virus.
use vaccine in areas where disease is endemic or where infection has been diagnosed.
Vaccinations are applied by scarification of the skin on the thigh or drinking water.
In enzootic areas, what is the vaccination schedule for FPV?
- In the first few weeks of life
2. 8-12 weeks later
What is a control measure for FPV?
Control mosquitos, lice, and mites.
