Plant reproduction Flashcards
Draw the diagram and label the parts
Carpels - stigma, style, ovary, ovules, stamens - filament, sepals and petals
What are the stamens?
The male parts of the flower. they have anthers and filaments
What does the anther do?
contain pollen grains that produce male sex cells
what does the filament do?
support the anther
what does the carpels consist of?
the stigma, style, ovary and ovules
what does the ovary contain?
female sex cells inside the ovules
what do the sepals do?
protect the flower in the bud
what is pollination?
getting pollen to the stigma
How is the seed made?
pollen grains must get from the stamen to the stigma
What are the two ways the seed can be made?
Self pollination
cross pollination
What is self - pollination?
pollen is transferred from stamen to stigma on the same plant
what is cross - pollination?
give the two ways it can involve in
Pollen is transferred from stamen of one plant to the stigma of a different plant
Insect pollination
wind pollination
what plant features help insect pollination to happen?
- bright petals
- scented flowers with nectaries
- sticky stigma to take the pollen off the insect as it goes from plant to plant
What plant features help wind pollination to happen?
- small dull petals
- no scent or nectaries
- long filaments
- stigmas are feathery to catch pollen as it’s carried past in the wind
