Electromagnets Flashcards
what does a wire with a current in it have?
A magnetic field
what is a solenoid?
A long coil of wire
What are magnets made current-carrying wire called?
Electromagnets
what happens when the current is turned off
the magnetic field is turned off
what 3 can you increase the strength of an electromagnet
more current in the wire, More turns the solenoid and a core of soft iron inside the solenoid.
Why can’t you use just any metal?
Because it may just stay magnetised when the current is turned off
How are electric motors made
Long coil of wire, a magnet and circuit
how is a simple electric motor made?
from a looped coiled wire in a magnetic field
Why does a magnetic field form from when there is current flowing through the wire?
Draw a diagram
Since the north pole is going one direction and the magnetic field is going round then they bump into eachother this creates a force between them. The forces act in opposite directions, one going up another going down causing the wire to turn like a motor does
