Air and Water Resistance Flashcards
What do air and water resistance do when an object is moving through air or water
they push against objects
How can things go fast
They have to be streamline - means they can slip through the air or water without too much resistance
Give the steps for Air resistance slowing parachutists down
1) Gains speed
- At the start the person has the force of its weight
2) Still gaining speed
- the opposing for of air resistance gets more and more
3) Losing speed
- when parachute opens the air resistance opens because there’s much larger area trying to cut through air. The person loses speed and slows down gratefully
4) Steady speed
- Quickly the air becomes equal to the weight - the two forces are balanced. Overall force is 0 so person moves at steady speed
5) No speed
- Once on the ground, the person’s weight acting downwards is balanced by an equal upward force from the ground
