Plant nutrition Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
a chemical reaction
in what form does photosynthesis produce food
in the form of glucose
how can the plant use glucose?
to increase it’s growth
Where in the plant does photosynthesis occur?
the leaves
What 4 things are needed for photosynthesis?
Sunlight, chlorophyll, carbon dioxide and water
what is chlorophyll?
a green chemical found in the chloroplasts of plant cells.
What does carbon dioxide do?
diffuses into the leaves from the air
how is the water absorbed and where to does it go?
it’s absorbed from the soil by the plant roots and carried up to the leaves
write a step by step of what happens for photosynthesis
1) Chlorophyll absorbs sunlight
2) it uses the sunlight’s energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose.
3) While glucose is produced, oxygen as well is produced
Write the word equation for photosynthesis
give the reactants and products
carbon dioxide + water → Glucose + Oxygen
(the reactants, L) (the products, R)
What is the leave’s big surface are useful for?
for absorbing light
Were are chloroplasts found?
near the top of the leaf
What are the tine holes under the leaf called
stomata
What does the stomata do?
It allows carbon dioxide to move into the leaf and allow oxygen to then move out of the leaf.
so there is more space for carbon dioxide to move easily
What are the veins in the leaves used for?
to deliver water to the leaf cells and take away glucose
