Mixtures Flashcards
What are mixtures
Mixtures are substance that are NOT chemically joined up
What’s a pure substance
A pure substance is made up of only one type of elements or only one type of compound and cannot be separated without a chemical reaction
What does a mixture contain?
A mixture contains 2 or more different substance (Like sea water or air) that can be separated very easily by using physical methods.
A mixture has the properties of its constituent parts
What happens when you add a solid to a liquid
When you add a solid to a liquid the bonds holding the solute particles together sometimes break
The solute particles mix with the particles in the liquid, forming a solution
Why does the water not overflow when salt is added to the water
Water does not overflow because the salt fills the gaps between water particles
Give the definitions for the seven
solute, solvent, solubility, solution, soluble, insoluble, saturated
Solute - solid being dissolved
solvent - The liquid it’s being dissolved into
solution - a mixture of a solute and a solvent that doesn’t separate out
saturated - Solution that won’t dissolve any solute at that temperature
soluble - Means it will dissolve
solubility - Measure of how much solute will dissolve
insolubility - Means it will NOT dissolve
How can solubility increase
Solubility increases with temperature
higher temperature more solute will dissolve in the solvent because particles move faster
