give the stages for fertilisation and development

A

1) Ovulation - an egg is released from an ovary
2) copulation - Millions of sperm are released from the penis into the vagina
3) fertilisation - the egg is fertilised when the nuclei of the egg and sperm join. fertilised egg is call zygote.
4) cell division - 24 hours after fertilisation the fertilised egg divides into 2 cells and after 4 days it divides into 32 cells now called an embryo
5) implantation - one week after fertilisation, the embryo starts to embed itself into the walls of the uterus and the placenta begins to develop

How does the embryo develop during gestation?

A

1 month - embryo is 6mm long and has a brain, heart, eyes, ears and legs.
9 weeks - body is about 25mm and is completely formed - called a fetus
3 months - about 54mm long and looks much more like a baby
5 months - about 160mm long it kicks and its fingernails can be felt
7 months - 370mm long and is ‘viable’. means it would have a fair chance of survival if born at this stage
39 weeks - 520mm long. fully developed and ready to be born.
