Placenta Flashcards
What vitamins cross the placenta barrier readily?
Vitamins B, C, D
What process is used for the transfer of antibodies?
Pinocytosis
What changes are seen in the placenta in late pregnancy?
- no cytotrophoblasts visible
- More fetal capillaries seen
- harder to distinguish between fetal and maternal cells
What week does the placenta start to form?
Week 1
When does the teriatrary villi start forming?
End of week 3
What day does the fetus start using nutrients from the mother?
Day 12
What is the tissue of the decidua that covers the fetus that is not involved in the placenta?
Decidua capsularis
What is the tissue surrounding the rest of the womb that doesn’t come into contact with the placenta or fetus?
Decidua Parietalis
What is the function on the amnion?
Provide physical protection
What layers make up the placenta barrier?
4 layers:
- Fetal capillary endothelium
- connective tissue of villi
- cytotrophoblasts
- syncytiotrophoblasts
What happens to the barrier as pregnancy progresses?
There is loss of the cytotrophoblasts and increased blurring of the maternal and fetal aspects of the placenta
What is found in the umbilical vein?
Wharton’s Jelly
Umbilical artery
Umbilical vein
Allantoic duct
