Photosynthesis Introduction Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
The process plant leaf cells undergo in order to produce glucose and oxygen from light energy using water and carbon dioxide
Where does photosynthesis take place?
In the chloroplasts of a plant cell
Equation for photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide + water ——> Glucose + oxygen
Where does the carbon in glucose come from?
Carbon dioxide
Where does hydrogen in glucose come from?
The water
Where does the oxygen come from in glucose?
The carbon dioxide
Where does the oxygen come from that is produced in photosynthesis?
The water
Membrane of chloroplast
Double membrane bound organelle
Liquid inside the chloroplasts
The stroma
What is the function of the stroma?
Contains enzymes, sugars, amino acids and carbohydrates
Stored products of photosynthesis not used right away
Thylakoids
Fluid filled sacks surrounded by a membrane
Contains the chlorophyll and pigments for first step of photosynthesis to occur
Granum
When thylakoids stack on top of each other to form granum
Lamellae
Made up of thylakoids membranes to link granum together
Starch grains
In the chloroplasts to store starch that isn’t immediately used in the cell
Circular loop of DNA + ribosomes in chloroplasts
Chloroplasts can synthesise their own proteins
