Biodiversity Flashcards
Biodiversity
The variety of living organisms in an area
Population
Number of individuals of a particular species in a given area
Community
Biotic (living) components in an ecosystem.
This will include multiple populations of different species eg all the different bacteria, animals and plants and fungi
Habitat
The place where an organism lives
Ecosystem
The community (all the different populations) and the abiotic non living environment eg the habitat (water cycle, co2, temperature)
Ecosystem
The community (all the different populations) and the abiotic non living environment eg the habitat (water cycle, co2, temperature)
Local biodiversity
Variety of living organisms in a small local habitat such as a forest
Global biodiversity
Variety of species (living organisms) on earth
Where is global biodiversity greatest ?
At the equator and expands outwards
Species richness
A simple measurement of the number of different species in a community: a headcount of the different species in this community
Species evenness
The relative abundance of the different species in a community so the population sizes of each different species:
Eg relative to daisies, there are a lot more dandelions in this field. So not that even.
Index of diversity
An equation used to measure biodiversity to take the richness of the different number of species and the evenness of these species into account
Index of diversity calculation
Total number of organisms of all species x (Total number of organisms of all species-1)
Divided by
For every species, the number of organisms of that species x (the number of organisms of that species-1)
