Lung disease Flashcards
Risk factor
A factor that increases someone’s chance of getting a disease
Tidal volume
The volume of air in each breathe
Ventilation rate
The number of breaths per minute
Forced expiratory volume
The max air that can be breathed out in 1 second
Forced vital capacity
The maximum volume of air it is possible to breathe forcefully out of the lungs after a really deep breath in (eg in the internal intercostal muscles were to contract)
Measures of lung function
Tidal volume
Ventilation rate
Forced expiratory volume
Forced vital capacity
Examples of lung disease
Tuberculosis
Fibrosis
Asthma
Emphysema
Tuberculosis
Infection with bacteria = immune system cells build wall around bacteria
Small hard lumps in lungs called tubercles, causing tissue inside to die = damaged
Damages gaseous exchange site so tidal volume (gas breathed out) reduced
