Oxidative Phosphorylation Flashcards
When does this take place?
After the Krebs cycle?
Where does this take place?
In the inner I-N-N-E-R mitochondrial membrane
What does this reaction mainly require from the previous reactions?
NADH from Glycolysis, link reaction, Krebs cycle
FADH from Krebs cycle
Is NADH from glycolysis used in oxidative phosphorylation?
Only if oxygen is present it will diffuse in to the mitochondria
Is NADH from glycolysis used in oxidative phosphorylation?
Only if oxygen is present it will diffuse in to the mitochondria
Oxidation of NADH and FADH
Loses hydrogen ion and high energy electron
Electrons released from oxidation of NADH and FADH
Electrons released into electron transfer chain in the inner mitochondrial membrane
And passed along electron carriers
Movement of electrons in electron transfer chain..
Will release energy for the active transport of H+ ions against an electrochemical gradient from the matrix to inside the inter membrane soace
Once H+ ions have been actively pumped into inter membrane space, what happens?
They will diffuse down back into the matrix via ATP synthase down electrochemical gradient
Diffusion of H+ ions into matrix will..
Release energy to change tertiary structure of ATP synthase to be complementary to ADP and Pi substrate to synthesise ATP
The hydrogen ions and electrons and oxygen in the matrix can..
Form water by reduction of oxygen
Final electron acceptor of electron transfer chain
Oxygen
